“The space in which we practice is a temple to be revered and honored. The flow… the journey… the breath… is a ritual, a gateway to bring us closer to the truth.” - JS
I grew up in the small coastal community of Virginia Beach, Va., raised by my mother, a writer and artist devoted to a life path of spirituality and purpose. From an early age I was exposed to unique and unconventional belief systems, teachings of Ram Dass, Edgar Cayce, Thich Nhat Hanh and Lao Tzu to name a few. These perspectives in many ways shaped the way I would navigate the world. The people I loved and admired most as a child always encouraged me to follow my passions, to live life fully, and to heed the calling of my soul.
From an early age I was a natural athlete, passionate about movement and play. Growing up by the ocean I learned to surf at a young age and began competing while I was still a boy. This mystical relationship with the ocean became the centerpiece of my goals and I relocated to Southern California to complete high school. After graduation, a series of auspicious events led me to travel to the islands of Hawaii. Without a plan or clear direction, I courageously followed the voice of my heart. In a short time I planted roots in Hawaii, a magical place to call home. There I remained for almost two decades.
In Hawaii, I found my next great passion, music. Specifically rhythm, drums and percussion. I became entrenched by the traditions of Jazz, R & B, and Reggae, as well as music from Africa, Cuba and Brazil. My hard work, natural talent and a driven passion within, led me to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. There I received a degree in Performance with an emphasis on arranging and composition. I went on to tour the world, performing with various groups and artists as well as recording and educating. I always felt at home immersed in culture, creativity and adventure. Ways of being outside the normal routines and directives of the masses.
My pursuits have always been rich with texture, flavor and individuality, but at the same time similar, aligned and congruent. I have discovered numerous parallels between the different avenues of my experience and the teachings of Yoga. It is from this diverse background that I bring a profound, all encompassing depth and connection to my classes, trainings, retreats and workshops. I consider myself a gifted teacher and have always had a passion for sharing that which touches my heart. I’ve found great healing and empowerment through the art of Yoga, in essence a sense of belonging. Deep nourishing roots amidst the ever shifting tides of life.
“mystical vision… an ancient tree which expands across the universe. all limbs connected and guiding us to liberation and remembrance of the source from which we are never apart.” - JS
Some of my most pronounced influences and mentors include Gina Caputo(Colorado School of Yoga), Shiva Rea(Prana Flow), Rod Stryker(ParaYoga), David Kyle(Progressive Ashtanga Vinyasa/Rocket Yoga), and Josh Summers(Yin Yoga). I have practiced many styles and been influenced by numerous lineages. As a result, my teaching style is unique and refreshing. A hybridized and invigorating approach which delicately balances power and grace in the true spirit of union.
Within the practice I emphasize breath and mindfulness as well as focused, fluid transition. I encourage creative expression, all within a container of rhythmic, fluid pace. My informed, creative approach to sequencing compels presence, balanced engagement and penetrating focus. My intention is to inspire personal transformation and remembrance. An alchemical uncovering of our natural state... empowerment, peace, well being and grace. In the past few years I have committed myself to mentoring and educating teachers in an effort to pass on a potent lineage of teaching Yoga with authenticity, reverence and artistry. I seek to Illuminate a teachers’ ability to be a conduit. To access subtle realms beyond postures and movement and conduct a cosmic dance. With humility and curiosity I remain devoted to refining my practice, knowledge and experience. Forever a student, while in the seat of the teacher.
